Will Technology Make Us Lose Our Thinking and Decision Making Skills
A phone can finish a sentence, suggest a route, correct a spelling mistake, recommend a medicine video, and even write an email. That convenience is useful, but it raises a serious question: if technology keeps thinking for us, will we slowly stop thinking deeply for ourselves?
The hidden cost of overusing technology
Technology saves time, but overuse can weaken everyday mental habits. When people depend on search engines for every small doubt, GPS for every route, and apps for every reminder, the brain gets fewer chances to practise memory, judgement, and problem-solving.
The risk is not that humans will suddenly lose intelligence. The risk is slower and quieter. We may become less patient with uncertainty, less willing to read long texts, and less confident in making choices without digital support.
Simple examples show this clearly:
Many people no longer remember phone numbers.
Auto correct has reduced attention to spelling.
Short videos have made long reading feel difficult for some.
Online reviews often influence personal judgement more than direct experience.
AI can help, but it can also weaken judgement
Artificial Intelligence has real benefits. It can summarise complex topics, translate languages, support learning, detect patterns in medical data, and help people work faster. Used well, AI can act like a helpful assistant.
The problem begins when AI becomes a replacement for thinking. If every essay, message, health doubt, shopping choice, or career decision is handed over to a tool, personal judgement may become weak.
AI should support decisions, not own them. It can offer options, but humans still need to ask: Is this accurate? Is this ethical? Does this fit my situation?
AI tools can also make mistakes, reflect bias, or give answers that sound confident but are wrong. Blind trust in such systems can affect personal, financial, educational, and health-related decisions.
Personal decision-making needs practice
Decision-making improves through experience. People learn by comparing options, facing consequences, and reflecting on mistakes. When apps constantly suggest what to eat, watch, buy, read, or believe, personal choice can become passive.
This matters in Indian households too, where family, tradition, expert advice, and digital influence often overlap. A balanced mind can listen to all sources, but still decide with awareness.
Healthy use of technology means pausing before accepting a recommendation. Ask whether the choice comes from real need, social pressure, habit, or algorithmic suggestion.
Reading, writing, and spelling are changing
Digital tools have changed how people read and write. Spell-checkers, grammar tools, voice typing, and AI writing assistants are useful, especially for students and professionals. They can improve clarity and reduce errors.
Yet over dependence can weaken core skills. If a person never checks spelling manually, never reads deeply, and never writes original thoughts, language ability may become shallow. Reading long-form content builds focus. Writing by oneself builds structure, memory, and expression.
A useful habit is to write first, then use tools for correction. That keeps the mind active.
Health advice should not come only from screens
Technology has made health information easy to access, but self-diagnosis through videos, apps, or AI chats can be risky. Symptoms can have many causes. A general answer cannot replace a trained professional.
For health concerns, people should consult qualified medical doctors. Those who follow traditional systems should also seek guidance from registered Ayurveda experts. This is especially important before taking medicines, herbs, supplements, or home remedies.

FAQ
Can technology really reduce thinking skills?
Yes, if it is used as a constant substitute for memory, reading, writing, and judgement. Used mindfully, it can support thinking instead.
Is AI harmful for students?
AI is not harmful by itself. It becomes a problem when students copy answers without understanding, writing, or analysing the topic.
How can people protect decision-making skills?
They can make small decisions without apps, read longer texts, write regularly, question AI answers, and reflect before acting.
Should health apps be trusted?
Health apps can offer general guidance, but they should not replace qualified doctors or registered Ayurveda practitioners.
A balanced way forward
Technology will not automatically make us lose our thinking and decision-making skills. Passive use might. The answer is not to reject technology, but to use it with discipline. Let tools reduce effort where needed, but keep the mind involved where judgement, health, language, and values matter.
