Should rock salt be consumed?
Namaste, I am Dr. Satish Vasant Shindadkar. Today we are going to look at
the properties of salt as well as
which type of salt is best for our health
this topic.
In Ayurveda, five types of salt are said to be
suitable for human consumption, among them
Sauvarcala
Saindhava
Vida, Audbhida and Samudra / sea are the five types of salt
which are called Lavana in Ayurveda.
All five types of salt are described as being suitable for humans to consume
in their lives in the form of food or medicine.
Among these, the last one described, Samudra Lavana, means
salt prepared from seawater.
This is described as inferior by Ayurveda, meaning that as far as possible
it should not be used.
It is not very good for our body, but
in today's daily routine, we use this very salt
regularly.
So the very first type mentioned is Sauvarcala Lavana. Although this type is the best,
it is not available in large quantities, whereas the second
type mentioned is Saindhava Lavana. This type
is abundantly available and
is also excellent in terms of quality, so
there is no objection to using it.
Generally, salt creates unctuousness, that is,
moisture throughout the body, meaning
it helps retain water in the body.
It is hot in nature and increases appetite.
In the purification procedures of Ayurveda, that is, Panchakarma's
Vamana
Virechana
Basti
Shirovirechana, that is, Nasya, etc.
along with these procedures, it is also used
medicinally in Snehana and Swedana procedures.
In medicines, it is mainly used in digestive medicines,
appetite-enhancing medicines as well as
indigestion
stomach rumbling
bloating
abdominal cramps
stomach pain and
various types of Vata disorders.
All five types of salt are used in these conditions.
Salt thins Kapha,
causes salivation in the mouth, that is, produces saliva, and
gives food a pleasant taste.
In short, salt is easy to digest and
creates unctuousness / moisture in the body, but
it is hot in nature.
Salt should be used only in moderation. If
salt is consumed excessively, - - -
the Pitta dosha increases in the body.
Pitta increases in the blood and bleeding can occur through various channels of the body, such as
through the mouth
through the stool
bleeding can occur through the anus, as well as
due to excessive consumption
excessive thirst
fever
skin disorders
weakness in the muscle tissues
increasing toxins in the body
wearing away of the teeth / / / premature tooth loss
loss of virility
causing fatigue in the body
premature wrinkles on the skin
premature hair loss / / / graying of hair
hyperacidity, that is, acidity
Vata-rakta, that is, gout
various types of skin disorders, etc., occur, therefore
whatever type of salt it may be, its proper
use in moderation is beneficial.
Of all five types of salt described in Ayurveda,
the one described as the most inferior, Samudra, that is, salt
prepared from the sea, should not be used, and
if Saindhava salt is used, it can certainly promote our health.
