What to Eat During Fasting Healthy Foods Fruits Sabudana Rajgira and More
Fasting can feel light and refreshing, or tiring and uncomfortable, depending on what you eat. The right fasting foods help maintain energy, support digestion, and prevent unnecessary cravings through the day.
This guide is for general information only. If you have diabetes, acidity, kidney issues, pregnancy-related needs, or any medical condition, speak with a doctor or dietitian before changing your fasting diet.
Choose simple foods that give steady energy
During a fast, the goal is not just to avoid regular grains or certain foods. The goal is to eat in a way that feels light, balanced, and nourishing.
Good fasting-friendly options include:
Fresh fruits such as banana, apple, papaya, pomegranate, and chikoo
Curd, milk, buttermilk, or paneer if they suit your digestion
Nuts and seeds in small portions
Boiled potatoes or sweet potatoes
Sabudana khichdi, preferably with peanuts and less oil
Rajgira roti, laddoo, or porridge
Singhada flour preparations such as thalipeeth or dosa
Drink enough water through the day. Coconut water, lemon water, and plain buttermilk can also help, especially in hot weather.
Fruits and sabudana can be useful when eaten wisely
Fruits are one of the easiest fasting foods. They provide natural sweetness, fibre, water, and quick energy. A fruit bowl with curd can work well as a light meal.
Sabudana is also popular during fasts in India. It gives energy and feels filling, but it is rich in starch. To make it more balanced, prepare sabudana khichdi with roasted peanuts, cumin, green chilli, and minimal ghee or oil. Avoid eating very large portions, especially if you feel sleepy or heavy after it.
Light meals help you feel better during fasting
Heavy fasting meals often defeat the purpose of the fast. Fried snacks, rich sweets, and oversized plates can cause bloating, acidity, and sluggishness.
Light meals are easier to digest and may help you:
Stay active through the day
Avoid sudden hunger
Feel calm and focused
Sleep better at night
Prevent overeating after the fast
A simple plate of boiled sweet potato, curd, fruit, and a small portion of nuts can be more helpful than deep-fried fasting snacks.
Add rajgira, sweet potato, and singhada flour
Rajgira is a good fasting grain alternative and can be used in rotis, porridge, or light laddoos. Boiled sweet potato gives natural sweetness and keeps you full. Singhada flour works well for thalipeeth, pancakes, or rotis.
Try to cook these with less oil and pair them with curd or chutney for better taste and balance.
Avoid too many sweets and heavy foods
Fasting sweets can be tasty, but too much sugar and ghee may lead to heaviness and energy crashes. Deep-fried vadas, chips, and rich desserts can also make digestion slower.
Keep sweets occasional and small. Choose home-cooked, fresh, and lightly prepared food whenever possible.
FAQ
Can I eat only fruits during fasting?
Yes, some people do well with a fruit-based fast. Add curd, milk, or nuts if you need more fullness and energy.
Is sabudana healthy for fasting?
Sabudana can be part of a fasting meal, but portion size matters. Add peanuts and use less oil to make it more balanced.
What is a good light dinner on a fasting day?
Curd with fruit, rajgira roti, boiled sweet potato, or singhada thalipeeth can make a simple dinner.
Should I avoid fried fasting foods completely?
You do not have to avoid them completely, but keep them limited. Fried foods can cause heaviness and acidity.
Fasting works best when it supports both faith and health. Choose simple foods, stay hydrated, eat mindfully, and let the fast leave you feeling lighter, not drained.
