The Toxic Effects of Pollution on Health
Poisoning caused by pollution can be considered a special type of poisoning.
Other poisons are used by an individual for a specific purpose, but poisoning due to pollution is not under the control of any one person.
Many chemicals are released into the environment from industrial and household waste, polluting the air, water, soil, etc.
Since maintaining environmental balance and protecting public health are important, this issue should be taken seriously.
This is a social problem and cannot be solved individually.
Water can be purified to a greater or lesser extent, but air, soil, and similar elements cannot be completely purified.
Therefore, we need to strengthen our immunity to cope with them.
Let us first look at noise pollution -
Due to many sources of noise, noise pollution has become a major concern worldwide. It mainly includes transportation systems such as aircraft, trains, road traffic, etc. Noise pollution can also occur in industrial and residential buildings, for example, kitchen appliances such as mixers, juicers, pressure cookers, and other devices such as vacuum cleaners, washing machines, TVs, dryers, coolers, etc.
Some people become accustomed to this noise, but continuous exposure adversely affects their hearing.
Some even become permanently deaf.
Some experience reduced concentration.
Many factories continuously produce harsh noise, and people working there often develop hearing loss.
Among those who become deaf, about one-third are found to have noise pollution as the cause.
Some people have the habit of listening to loud music; this is also a warning for them because loud noise is always harmful.
Listening to harsh and loud sounds not only causes hearing loss but also leads to increased blood pressure, a faster heartbeat, irritability, and aggression.
Large-scale tree planting and maintenance should be carried out in areas affected by noise pollution.
The leaves of these trees help reduce the intensity of sound.
Next, let us look at water pollution -
In the case of water, there are natural impurities and human-made or artificial impurities.
Natural impurities are generally not dangerous and include -
1. Dissolved gases (e.g., nitrogen, CO2, H2S, etc.)
2. Dissolved minerals (Mg, Na, etc.)
3. Impurities (sand, silt, clay)
4. Microorganisms.
Artificial impurities arise due to human error, urbanization, and industrialization, and include -
1. Sewage containing biodegradable organic matter and disease-causing organisms.
2. Industrial and commercial waste.
3. Agricultural pollutants—chemicals, etc.
Water-related diseases include:
Viral -
Bacterial - etc.
Next, let us look at air pollution -
Air pollution is a social problem.
It cannot be completely avoided. It includes:
1. Emissions from automobiles—hydrocarbons, CO, lead, NO2, particulate matter.
2. Industries.
3. Household sources.
4. Tobacco smoke.
This results in -
Disorders of the respiratory system,
Reduced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood,
Fatigue,
Memory loss, etc.
To address this:
Use public transportation.
Whenever possible, buy battery-powered vehicles in the future.
Electricity generation also causes air pollution, so if everyone generates the electricity needed for their home using rooftop solar power, it will help reduce pollution.
Next, let us look at land pollution -
The use of fertilizers, pesticides, etc. in agriculture is necessary, but it affects the soil.
Air and water pollutants also contaminate the soil.
Industrial waste is dumped in open fields and rivers.
Household waste, such as soapy water, also contributes.
Air pollution can contaminate soil through acid rain.
The effects of soil pollution on human health include hormonal disorders, stomach ailments, infections, etc.
To prevent this:
Use fertilizers and pesticides according to expert advice, ensuring they are used in appropriate amounts.
Improve immunity, etc.
