Sleep Deprivation Effects and Ayurvedic Tips for Better Sleep
Poor sleep does more than cause yawning the next day. It affects mood, learning, immunity, appetite, blood pressure, and long-term health. Sleep is the body’s nightly repair window, and when it gets cut short often, the effects show up quickly.
Why sleep matters for the brain and body
During deep sleep, the brain sorts information, strengthens memories, and clears mental fatigue. Good sleep supports focus, decision-making, emotional balance, and faster recall.
Sleep also helps the immune system respond well. When rest is poor, the body may struggle to fight common infections and recover from illness. Adequate sleep supports hormone balance too, including hormones linked to hunger, stress, and blood sugar.
How sleep deprivation affects children and adults
In children, lack of sleep may appear as irritability, hyperactivity, poor attention, and learning difficulties. Since the brain is still developing, regular sleep loss can affect memory, behaviour, and cognitive development.
In adults, sleep deprivation often causes:
Low concentration and slower reaction time
Mood changes, including anger, anxiety, or sadness
Poor memory and reduced work performance
Higher cravings for sugary or high-calorie foods
Physical health risks, including hypertension, weight gain, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes risk over time
Long-term poor sleep can also worsen stress, headaches, acidity, and fatigue.
Ayurvedic tips for better sleep
Ayurveda views sleep, or nidra, as one of the pillars of health. Simple daily habits can help calm the nervous system before bedtime.
Try these gentle practices:
Keep a fixed sleep and wake time, even on weekends.
Eat dinner early and keep it light.
Avoid caffeine late in the day.
Reduce screen use at least 30 to 60 minutes before bed.
Try abhyanga, a warm oil massage with Siddheshwar Vatghna Oil, sesame or coconut oil, especially on the feet and scalp.
Practise slow breathing or a short meditation before sleep.
These habits work best when followed consistently.
