Modern Extract Ayurveda
Nothing in our lives remains constant — change is the only constant in life. The same is true of technology, where new developments keep happening continuously. Massive computers have now become extremely compact, and we see this transformation today.
The same principle applies to medicines, especially Ayurvedic medicines. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could reduce the dosage of medicines? That is what we are going to discuss.
If we consider the science of medicine, Ayurveda has existed since the very creation of the universe. In the earliest days of treatment, five types of medicinal preparations were developed.
一. Any medicine available in its natural form—such as leaves, flowers, or roots—was ground on a traditional grinding stone into a paste and consumed like a chutney. In Ayurveda, this preparation is called Kalka.
二. Later, another preparation evolved. The ground paste was placed in a cloth and its juice was extracted. This was called Rasa Kalpana or Swarasa Kalpana (fresh juice preparation).
三. Aromatic substances were soaked overnight in cold water, and the water was filtered and consumed the next morning. This preparation came to be known as Hima Kalpana.
四. Certain herbs with hard outer coverings were coarsely crushed, soaked in hot water, and after a specific period, filtered for drinking. This preparation was called Phanta Kalpana.
五. Some herbs were coarsely powdered, boiled in water for a certain period, allowed to cool until lukewarm, filtered, and then consumed. This preparation was known as Kwatha, or herbal decoction.
Thus, these five different medicinal preparations were used from ancient times. Gradually, changes occurred. Preparations such as Asava and Arishta were developed to preserve these decoctions for longer periods. Similarly, Churna (powder), Gutika, and Vati—which today are comparable to tablets—also came into use.
Later, Ghana Kalpana (solid extract preparation) and Arka Kalpana (distillate preparation) were introduced.
Some plants bloom only during certain seasons, some have leaves only during specific periods, and some fruits are also seasonal. The question arose: how could these herbs be used in other seasons? To solve this, preservative preparations such as Asava and Arishta were developed from decoctions. In these preparations, the decoction was brought into contact with Dhataki flowers, allowing self-generated alcohol to form naturally. As a result, the medicine could be preserved for many years.
Similarly, another preparation was developed for decoctions, known as Ghana Kalpana. In this process, a decoction is first prepared and then further concentrated by prolonged boiling. The essential constituents are extracted into the water and then converted into a thick, concentrated form.
In other words, only the necessary components are retained while the unnecessary parts are removed. This significantly reduces the quantity of medicine required.
A similar method called the Extract method is now available. In this process, the dosage of medicines becomes much smaller while making the medicine more effective.
In the extract method, the useful constituents of the raw material are isolated using solvents such as ethanol or water, and the medicine is then prepared in powder or other forms.
Medicines prepared in extract form have proven to be highly effective because:
一. They contain the main active principles.
二. If the extract is in powder form, it is usually consumed in capsules because such powders cannot remain dry under normal atmospheric conditions—they absorb moisture. Therefore, they are filled into capsules for use.
三. The extract powder is generally only about 10% of the original raw herbal powder. For example, if 5 grams (about one teaspoon) of Shatavari powder or Ashwagandha powder is the normal dose, its extract form is only about 500 mg. More importantly, taking a single 500 mg capsule of the extract is much easier than consuming a full teaspoon of the raw powder.
四. Because of its smaller quantity, it is easy to carry.
五. Since it is taken in capsule form, there is no issue with taste.
六. Medicines in extract form are absorbed immediately after reaching the stomach because they contain only the active components in powder form. As they are rapidly absorbed by the body, their benefits are available quickly.
七. The possibility of adulteration in extract-based medicines is negligible because they are generally manufactured by large companies with GMP and similar quality certifications. In contrast, raw herbal powders have a greater possibility of adulteration.
八. Extract-based medicines have a longer shelf life, with an expiry period of three to five years, whereas raw herbal powders usually have an expiry period of only three months to one year.
九. Extraction methods have been extensively researched and developed for individual plants, and numerous studies support their effectiveness. As a result, many medicinal formulations are now being developed using extracts.
It is estimated that there are approximately 350,000 species of plants on Earth, and research on them continues every day. By using these plants in extract form appropriately for our health, it is certainly possible to enjoy a healthier and more comfortable life.
