Krushta or Underweight Causes Symptoms and Ayurvedic Treatment Guide
Being thin is not always a disease. But when low weight comes with weakness, dryness, poor appetite, fatigue, and loss of muscle, Ayurveda describes it as Krushta, or excessive leanness.
This guide is for information only. Underweight, sudden weight loss, breathlessness, long-term digestive issues, anaemia, or suspected TB need medical assessment.
What does Krushta mean in Ayurveda?
In Ayurveda, a person is considered Krushta when there is a clear lack of mamsa dhatu, or muscle tissue. The body may look bony, with very little flesh over the arms, chest, thighs, back, and joints.
Common signs include:
Sunken cheeks and deep-set eyes
Visible bones around the joints
Dizziness and tiredness
Dry mouth again and again
Lack of taste or poor interest in food
Dryness of skin and body
Low stamina, even after mild activity
From a modern view, weight is usually judged by age, height, and body build. But health is not only a number. A healthy person generally feels fresh, has good appetite, proper bowel movement, sound sleep, clear skin, stable energy, and a pleasant mind.
Common causes of underweight
Ayurveda links Krushta mainly with an increase in Vata dosha, often due to drying, depleting, or irregular habits.
Possible causes include:
Eating very dry, stale, poor-quality, or soda-added foods
Frequent fasting or excessive dieting
Vomiting, diarrhoea, worms, indigestion, or constipation
Poor appetite and weak digestion
Mental stress, anger, jealousy, grief, or constant worry
Lack of sleep and overwork
No exercise, or sometimes excessive strain
Long-term illness, old age, anaemia, grahani disorders, or tuberculosis
Hereditary tendency
Lack of physical and mental rest
When these causes continue, the body may fail to build proper nourishment.
Symptoms that need attention
Krushta may progress slowly. A person may notice breathlessness after walking a short distance, discomfort after eating slightly more food, and poor tolerance to heat or cold.
The abdomen, neck, and hips may look dry or wrinkled. Veins may appear prominent. Joints may look large compared with the rest of the body. If neglected, associated complaints such as piles, asthma-like symptoms, or spleen-related problems may develop.
Ayurvedic treatment approach
Treatment does not mean only taking weight-gain medicines. Weight depends on food, water, sleep, digestion, and mental health.
The first steps are simple:
Reduce worry and mental stress
Eat light-to-digest but nourishing food
Sleep on time and rest properly
Build appetite before increasing heavy foods
Follow treatment under a qualified Ayurvedic doctor
For appetite and digestion, medicines such as Agnitundi Ras or Panchakolasava may be advised. For mental strength, Brahmi or Saraswatarishta may be used. Depending on the person, preparations like Chyawanprash, Shatavari Kalpa, Kushmanda Pak, raisins, milk, ghee, or Suvarna Bhasma may be considered.
Ayurvedic therapies such as abhyanga, suitable exercise, yoga, and basti chikitsa may also help when done with medical guidance.
FAQ
Is being thin always unhealthy?
No. If energy, appetite, sleep, digestion, and mood are good, a naturally slim body may be healthy.
Can Ayurveda help in gaining weight?
Ayurveda may help by improving digestion, sleep, nourishment, and Vata balance. Treatment should be individualised.
Should I take Suvarna Bhasma or other medicines on my own?
No. Herbo-mineral medicines must be taken only under qualified medical supervision.
When should I see a doctor?
Seek help if weight loss is sudden, appetite is very low, fever persists, breathlessness occurs, stools are abnormal, or weakness is severe.
A steady recovery from Krushta comes from correcting the cause, improving digestion, calming the mind, and nourishing the body patiently.
