Eat Sweet Dishes with Care
Hello, I am Dr. Satish Vasant Shindadkar. Today, we are going to learn about a delicious but unscientifically consumed sweet dish.
There is nothing wrong with including a sweet dish in your diet. However, the common practice of eating a sweet dish at the end of a meal is harmful. The consequences of consuming a large quantity of sweet dishes after a meal are certainly unpleasant. Almost everyone has experienced this. Yet, while living in society, we continue to imitate others and follow Western customs.
Ayurveda clearly discusses not only what to eat but also when and in what order food should be consumed. Every food item has a specific taste, such as sweet, sour, salty, pungent (spicy), bitter, and astringent. These tastes are perceived by the tongue, but once digestion begins, the taste itself no longer matters.
Each taste (rasa) has a specific benefit for the body. However, consuming any one taste in excess also leads to harmful effects. Ayurveda recommends that everyone regularly consume food containing all six tastes. It also explains the order in which they should be eaten.
According to Ayurveda, sweet foods should be consumed first. This helps reduce Vata dosha. Sweet foods provide strength to the body. Although they are nourishing, they are also heavy to digest, so they should be eaten only in the required quantity.
Sour and salty foods such as chutney, pickles, and salads aid digestion, so they should also be included in small amounts. Foods with bitter, pungent, and astringent tastes help maintain the balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas. We commonly prepare vegetables such as fenugreek, bitter gourd, ridge gourd, sponge gourd, and bottle gourd. These vegetables naturally contain these tastes, and including a variety of them in the diet certainly contributes to a healthy life.
Ayurveda recommends beginning a meal with sweet foods because when we start eating, we are hungry. Giving the digestive fire (Agni) food that is heavy to digest at the beginning helps satisfy and regulate it. Sweet taste also stimulates the body, pleases the senses, and creates a sense of energy and enthusiasm.
The sweet taste is especially beneficial for patients suffering from wasting diseases such as tuberculosis (TB). It promotes breast milk production in nursing mothers, helps heal bones, increases longevity, and reduces Vata and Pitta doshas. However, excessive consumption increases obesity, reduces appetite, causes diseases such as diabetes, increases excess fat and Kapha, leads to fatty lumps, and may also contribute to breathing disorders such as asthma. Therefore, sweet foods should always be consumed in moderation.
In the category of sweet dishes, people commonly consume items such as gulab jamun, mawa-based sweets, yogurt, shrikhand, basundi, and many other milk-based preparations. All of these are heavy to digest and are usually eaten at the end of the meal.
Eating such foods after a feast or at a social gathering is, in a way, like inviting disease. At such events, people usually eat more than necessary, and even when there is no space left in the stomach, these sweets are consumed almost forcefully. In reality, according to Ayurvedic principles, these foods should be eaten at the beginning or during the meal. Eating them at the end only increases the likelihood of needing to visit a doctor sooner.
Sweet dishes should preferably be included in the morning meal because digestion is strongest in the morning. Even if a slightly larger quantity is consumed then, it usually does not cause significant problems. However, eating these foods at night certainly increases the likelihood of illness.
Although the concept of the sweet dish came to us from the West, we can modify the practice while following it. Instead of today's heavy desserts, we can include digestive fruits in the dessert course, such as slices of papaya, oranges, sweet lime, grapes, and pineapple, and still enjoy a sweet ending to the meal.
For a healthy life, our body needs all tastes—all six rasas. This balance is what keeps the body healthy. Merely eating excessive amounts of sweet or spicy foods does not lead to good health. If everyone understands the Ayurvedic principles of diet according to their individual constitution with the guidance of an Ayurvedic physician, it is entirely possible to enjoy healthy food and achieve a long, healthy life.
