Cracked Heels in Ayurveda Causes, Symptoms, Treatments, and When to Seek Medical Help
Cracked heels, known as Padadari in Ayurveda, are more than a cosmetic concern. Dry, split skin around the heel can become painful, bleed, and invite infection if ignored.
Ayurvedic view of cracked heels
Ayurveda links cracked heels mainly with Vata dosha aggravation. Vata is associated with dryness, roughness, and cracking. When the skin loses natural oiliness and moisture, the heel becomes hard, thick, and fissured.
Common symptoms include:
Dry, rough, and flaky skin on the heel
Pain while walking or standing
Deep cracks, sometimes with bleeding
Burning, itching, or tenderness
Thickened yellowish skin around the heel
Dry weather, ageing, prolonged standing, and inadequate foot care can worsen the condition.
Why women may experience cracked heels more often
Women often report cracked heels more than men due to a mix of lifestyle and biological factors. Frequent barefoot walking at home, open footwear, household work involving water, and repeated exposure to floor cleaners can dry the skin.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menopause, or thyroid imbalance may also affect skin hydration. In some cases, cosmetic foot treatments without regular moisturising can make the heel barrier weaker.
Triggers that make heel cracks worse
Walking on rough surfaces increases friction and pressure on the heel. Over time, the outer skin thickens and splits.
A dry diet, such as excessive intake of dry snacks, very little healthy fat, irregular meals, or low water intake, may worsen Vata imbalance in Ayurvedic terms.
Tobacco use can also harm skin health. It affects blood circulation and delays healing, making cracks more persistent and prone to infection.
Treatment options and daily care
Mild cracked heels often improve with consistent care.
Useful measures include:
Applying medicated Ayurvedic oils such as sesame oil-based preparations after washing the feet
Using herbal creams containing soothing ingredients like aloe vera, neem, or turmeric
Applying a thick moisturiser at night and wearing clean cotton socks
Avoiding harsh scrubbing when cracks are deep
Wearing cushioned footwear, especially on hard floors
People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation in the feet should avoid self-treatment for deep cracks.
When cracked heels need medical attention
Severe heel fissures can lead to infection. Warning signs include swelling, redness, warmth, pus, fever, increasing pain, or cracks that do not heal. Complications may include cellulitis and foot ulcers, especially in people with diabetes.
This article is for general information only. A qualified doctor or Ayurvedic physician can identify the cause and suggest safe treatment.
FAQ
Are cracked heels only due to dryness?
No. Dryness is common, but pressure, footwear, diabetes, thyroid issues, fungal infection, and poor circulation can contribute.
Can Ayurvedic oil heal cracked heels?
It may help mild dryness and roughness, especially with regular use. Deep, bleeding, or infected cracks need medical care.
Is it safe to cut thick heel skin at home?
Avoid cutting it yourself. It can cause injury and infection. Gentle filing and moisturising are safer.
When should a person see a doctor?
Seek care if there is pain, bleeding, pus, redness, swelling, diabetes, or no improvement after regular care.
