Ayurvedic Ways to Reduce Body Heat and Balance Pitta
A constant feeling of heat, acidity, irritability, burning sensation, mouth ulcers, excessive sweating, or skin redness can point to aggravated pitta dosha in Ayurveda. Pitta is linked with heat, digestion, metabolism, and transformation. When it rises too much, the body may feel overheated and uncomfortable.
This article is for general information only. For persistent acidity, fever, severe skin issues, or ongoing digestive trouble, consult a qualified doctor or Ayurvedic practitioner.
Understand the signs of excess body heat
Ayurveda views body heat mainly through the balance of pitta. Common signs of excess pitta may include:
Burning in the stomach or chest
Sour belching or acidity
Redness of the eyes or skin
Anger, restlessness, or disturbed sleep
Loose motions or frequent thirst
Heat in the palms and soles
Managing pitta focuses on cooling, soothing, and supporting digestion without weakening the body.
Choose foods that calm pitta
A pitta-pacifying diet is usually cooling, mildly sweet, and easy to digest. Some useful examples include:
Sajuk ghee - A small amount of pure cow ghee can support digestion and reduce internal dryness and heat.
Carrot - Carrot is generally gentle and nourishing when cooked lightly.
Cow’s milk - Warm or room-temperature cow’s milk may help cool pitta when it suits digestion. Avoid it if it causes bloating or heaviness.
Amla - Amla is valued in Ayurveda for its cooling effect and support for digestion and skin health.
Gulkand - Gulkand, made from rose petals, is traditionally used to reduce heat, acidity, and burning sensations.
At the same time, avoid foods that increase heat. These include oily, spicy, fried, very sour, fermented, and excessively salty foods. Chilli, deep-fried snacks, alcohol, and too much tea or coffee can worsen pitta symptoms.
Use traditional remedies with care
Ayurveda mentions durva juice, prepared from fresh durva grass, as a cooling remedy. It is traditionally used for burning sensations, excess heat, and pitta-related discomfort. Use clean, fresh durva and take it only under expert guidance, especially if there are medical conditions or ongoing medicines.
Keeping the stomach clean is also considered essential. Constipation can increase heat and discomfort. Ayurveda often uses castor oil as a mild purgative, but the dose and timing matter. Do not self-medicate with castor oil if pregnant, elderly, weak, or dealing with bowel disease.
Support the body during Sharad Ritu
Sharad Ritu, the autumn season in India, is considered a time when pitta may naturally aggravate. Gentle purgation, known as virechana, is often recommended in Ayurveda during this period to remove excess pitta. This should be done only with professional supervision.
A simple daily practice is foot sole massage with cooling oils such as coconut oil or ghee. Massaging the soles before sleep may reduce heat, calm the nervous system, and support better rest.
