Ayurvedic Perspective on Cholesterol Control
Hello, I am Dr. Satish Vasant Shindadkar. Today, we will learn about how to control cholesterol from an Ayurvedic perspective and what its symptoms are.
Consuming foods that are very difficult to digest, excessively oily or fatty foods, alcohol, addictions such as tobacco, lack of exercise, and milk products such as milk, basundi, peda, butter, barfi, paneer, egg yolk, fried potatoes, all fried foods, fast food, meat, cakes, vegetable oils, and many other body-nourishing foods can lead to conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, etc. Before these diseases develop, many people experience an increase in blood cholesterol levels.
Nowadays, it has become common to eat desserts immediately after meals. This is also harmful. Irregular lifestyle, uncertainty, sleeping at odd hours, eating at irregular times, irregular work schedules such as shift duty, mental stress, etc., weaken the digestive system. When heavy-to-digest foods are consumed with weak digestion, it invites various diseases.
Cholesterol is a fatty, lipid-rich, oily substance. Therefore, eating fatty foods, consuming foods that increase Kapha, sleeping during the afternoon, waking up late in the morning, etc., increase cholesterol in the body. Heredity also plays a role in this disease. Cholesterol caused by hereditary factors is somewhat difficult to control.
When the body's digestive power weakens, improperly digested food essence is formed. In Ayurveda, this is called Ama. When Ama increases in the body, symptoms such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, weakness, laziness, constipation, difficulty passing urine, heaviness in the body, loss of taste, and a feeling of exhaustion throughout the body may occur.
When cholesterol is present in its normal amount in the body, it helps the nervous system function properly. However, when it becomes excessive, it puts stress on the heart. Symptoms include becoming breathless even after walking a little, feeling pressure on the chest, anxiety, and similar complaints.
An increase in cholesterol depends largely on an improper diet and lack of exercise. People who already have high cholesterol, those who are overweight, those who are at risk of developing high cholesterol, and those with hereditary high cholesterol can keep it under control by following a lifestyle appropriate to their body constitution.
Regarding diet, the morning meal should be around 10 a.m., and the evening meal should be around 6 p.m. The evening meal should be lighter and smaller in quantity than the morning meal.
Jowar (sorghum) should be a regular part of the diet. This includes jowar flatbread, popped jowar, and roasted jowar papad. Ragi or rice porridge, vegetable soup, green gram broth, green gram flour pancakes, roasted fenugreek, garlic, and vegetables such as bottle gourd, bitter gourd, drumstick, fenugreek, ridge gourd, along with mint, coriander seeds, fresh coriander leaves, ginger, and dry ginger should also be included.
On fasting days, consume fresh turmeric pickle, amaranth, barnyard millet, papaya, pineapple, pomegranate, raisins, and jamun.
A vegetarian diet should be followed. Both meals should be fresh and served hot.
Many people eliminate ghee from their daily diet out of fear of increased cholesterol. Although this may seem beneficial, cow's ghee is considered very useful for the body. Therefore, consuming one to two teaspoons (about 5 to 10 grams) of cow's ghee daily with meals is generally acceptable. During a meal—from the beginning to the end—drink no more than 200 ml of water. After finishing the meal, drink water according to your thirst after about 30 minutes.
Observe a fast once a week.
Proper dietary control helps keep cholesterol levels under control. However, patients whose cholesterol levels are significantly elevated, or who already have high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease, should take medications under medical supervision along with following the recommended dietary guidelines.
In this way, cholesterol can be kept under control. By following a daily routine, diet, and lifestyle suited to one's body constitution, it is possible to live a healthy and fulfilling life.
