Tulsi Benefits and Uses A Complete Guide to Holy Basil Types Tea and Remedies
Tulsi, or holy basil, is one of those plants that feels at home in both a prayer space and a kitchen garden. In many Indian homes, it is worshipped daily, used in simple remedies, and valued for its fresh, sharp aroma.
This guide is informational only. Tulsi can support everyday wellness, but it should not replace medical treatment, especially for chronic illness, pregnancy, children, or people on regular medicines.
Tulsi has deep religious and spiritual meaning
In Hindu tradition, tulsi is considered sacred and closely associated with Lord Vishnu and Krishna. Many homes keep a tulsi plant in the courtyard or balcony, light a diya near it, and offer water in the morning.
Spiritually, tulsi is seen as a symbol of purity, protection, and positive energy. Its presence is believed to cleanse the home environment and encourage calmness during prayer and meditation.
The two common types of tulsi
Gram tulsi, often grown near homes, is the familiar garden tulsi used in daily remedies. It has aromatic leaves and is commonly used for cough, cold, tea, and worship.
Van tulsi, or wild tulsi, grows more naturally in open areas and forest edges. It usually has a stronger smell and is traditionally used in folk remedies, especially where cultivated tulsi is not available.
How to use tulsi leaves, flowers, seeds, and roots
Leaves for cough and cold
Wash 7 to 10 fresh leaves. Boil them in 1 cup water for 5 minutes. Add a small piece of ginger and 1 teaspoon honey after it becomes warm. Drink once daily for 2 to 3 days.
Flowers for mild throat discomfort
Take 1 teaspoon dried tulsi flowers. Steep in 1 cup hot water for 7 minutes. Sip warm. This is traditionally used to soothe the throat.
Seeds for cooling support
Soak 1 teaspoon tulsi seeds in half a cup water for 20 to 30 minutes. Add to nimbu pani or plain water. Drink occasionally in hot weather. Do not overuse, as soaked seeds swell.
Roots for traditional decoction
Clean a small piece of dried tulsi root, about 1 to 2 grams. Boil in 1 cup water until reduced slightly. This is a traditional preparation, so use only with guidance from an Ayurvedic practitioner.
How to make tulsi tea
Boil 1 cup water. Add 8 fresh tulsi leaves, 2 crushed peppercorns, and a small slice of ginger. Simmer for 5 minutes, strain, and drink warm.
Tulsi tea may help with freshness, mild congestion, digestion after heavy meals, and a calm feeling during stressful days.
Tulsi helps keep mosquitoes and insects away
Tulsi contains natural aromatic oils that many insects dislike. Keeping a healthy tulsi plant near windows, balconies, or seating areas may reduce mosquitoes and small insects. Crushing a few leaves and placing them near entry points can also help, though it is not a complete replacement for mosquito nets or safe repellents.
