Kanher Poisonous Plant Guide Ayurvedic References Toxicity Allergy Risks and Safe Disposal
Kanher, also known as Karavira in Ayurveda and commonly identified as oleander, is a plant that looks harmless because of its beautiful flowers. Yet every part of it demands caution. Its leaves, stems, flowers, roots, seeds, and milky sap contain toxic compounds that can affect health if touched carelessly, chewed, burnt, or used without expert guidance.
This post is for information only. It is not medical advice, and Kanher should never be used as a home remedy.
Kanher in Ayurveda and ancient texts
In Ayurvedic literature, Kanher is generally referred to as Karavira. Classical texts recognise it as a potent plant with toxic properties. Because of this, it is discussed with strict warnings and, where medicinal use is mentioned, only after proper purification and under trained supervision.
Ancient Indian toxicology also places such plants under visha related categories. Kanher is often treated as a poisonous tree or shrub because accidental ingestion can be dangerous. The traditional view is clear: beauty does not make the plant safe.
Attractive flowers and common cultivation
Kanher is widely planted in India along compound walls, roadsides, gardens, and temple surroundings because it is hardy and flowers well in warm weather.
Its flowers are commonly seen in:
White
Pink
Red
Yellow or pale cream
Double-petalled ornamental varieties
It grows well in sunny locations and tolerates dry conditions. This easy cultivation is one reason it is popular. At the same time, it should not be planted where children, pets, or grazing animals may reach it.
Toxicity and health risks
Kanher contains cardiac glycoside-like toxic compounds. Ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, weakness, and serious poisoning. Even dried plant parts can remain unsafe.
The milky sap can also irritate the skin and eyes. Some people may develop:
Skin redness or itching
Burning sensation
Rashes or allergy-like reactions
Eye irritation if sap is transferred by hand
Stomach or heart-related symptoms after accidental intake
Wash exposed skin with plenty of water. If swallowed, seek urgent medical help. Do not try home treatment.
Safe handling and disposal
Wear gloves, long sleeves, and eye protection while cutting Kanher. Keep cut branches away from children and animals.
For disposal:
Do not burn the plant, as smoke may irritate the body.
Do not compost it for kitchen gardens.
Bag cut material securely.
Hand it over with garden waste where local collection allows.
Clean tools and wash hands after handling.
