Diwali Abhyanga Namskar Benefits of Oil Massage for Body Skin and Mind

Diwali mornings feel different when they begin with oil, warmth, and quiet care. In many Indian homes, Abhyanga Snan on Narak Chaturdashi is more than a bath. It is a ritual of cleansing, renewal, and gratitude towards the body.

Abhyanga means applying oil to the outer skin and gently massaging the body. During Diwali, this practice becomes special because it marks a fresh start before the day’s prayers, sweets, lamps, and family gatherings.

Why Abhyanga matters during Diwali

The festival of lights celebrates removing darkness and inviting wellbeing. Abhyanga fits beautifully into this idea. Warm oil massage before bath helps the body feel relaxed, grounded, and refreshed.

Traditionally, families use sesame oil, coconut oil, or herbal oils, depending on the season and body type. The massage is usually done before sunrise, followed by a warm bath. This is seen as a way to prepare the body and mind for the festive day.

What Ayurveda says about regular Abhyanga

In Ayurveda, Abhyanga is part of daily self-care, known as `dinacharya`. Regular oil massage is believed to support balance in the body, especially by calming excess Vata, which is linked with dryness, restlessness, and stiffness.

Commonly valued benefits include:

Softer skin - Oil helps reduce dryness and supports the skin barrier.

Better body comfort - Gentle massage may ease tired muscles and improve flexibility.

Healthier-looking hair - Scalp massage with suitable oil may nourish the scalp and reduce dryness.

Calmer mind - Slow, mindful touch can reduce stress and support better sleep.

This information is for general well being. People with skin conditions, allergies, fever, wounds, or medical concerns should take advice from a qualified professional.

The tradition of Abhyanga for children

Baby and child massage has a long place in Indian homes. Elders often massage children with warm oil before bath, especially during festivals. The practice creates bonding, warmth, and a sense of security.

For children, the oil should be mild, the pressure gentle, and the room warm. Avoid strong fragrances or harsh herbal mixtures. A small patch test is wise before using a new oil.

The right way to bathe after Abhyanga

After applying oil, wait for 10 to 20 minutes if comfortable. Then take a warm water bath. Many families use ubtan made with gram flour, turmeric, sandalwood, or herbal powders, but it should suit the skin.

A warm bath after Abhyanga helps remove excess oil, leaves the skin clean, and gives a fresh festive feeling. Avoid very hot water, as it can dry the skin.
