Coriander Benefits in Ayurveda and Daily Diet for Digestion, Fever and Health

A small spoon of coriander can change a meal, and in Indian homes, it often does more than add flavour. Known as dhaniya or धणे, coriander has been used for centuries in food and traditional medicine for its cooling, aromatic and digestion-friendly qualities.

Why coriander matters in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, coriander is valued as a gentle herb that supports balance without being harsh on the body. Classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita refer to herbs like coriander in the context of digestion, appetite, fever-related discomfort and excess thirst.

Ayurvedic tradition often describes coriander as having a cooling effect. This is why coriander seed water is commonly used in home remedies during warm weather or when the body feels heated. It is also considered useful for supporting agni, the digestive fire, especially when appetite feels low.

This article is for general information only. For fever, ongoing digestive trouble or any serious health condition, medical advice is essential.

Benefits for digestion, fever and thirst

Coriander seeds contain natural oils that give them their warm, citrusy aroma. These compounds may help reduce bloating and support smoother digestion after meals.

Common traditional uses include:

Digestive issues - Roasted coriander seed powder is often added to buttermilk, dals and vegetable dishes to support digestion.

Low appetite - Its fragrance can make food more appealing, which may help when appetite is dull.

Fever and thirst - Coriander seed water is traditionally used as a cooling drink. It may soothe dryness and excessive thirst, especially in hot Indian weather.

How coriander improves everyday cooking

Fresh coriander leaves brighten chutneys, poha, upma, dal, sabzi and chaats. Seeds add depth to masalas, pickles and curries. When lightly roasted, coriander seeds release a nutty, lemony aroma that makes food taste fuller without making it heavy.

Easy ways to use coriander daily

Try these simple habits:

Add chopped coriander leaves just before serving dal or sabzi.

Drink coriander seed water after soaking seeds overnight and straining them in the morning.

Use roasted coriander powder in curd, chaas or raita.

Add crushed coriander seeds to parathas, soups or khichdi.

FAQ

Is coriander good for digestion?

Can coriander help in fever?

Ayurveda uses coriander for its cooling nature, especially for thirst and heat discomfort. Fever should still be checked by a doctor if it persists.

Are coriander leaves and seeds equally useful?

Both are useful, but in different ways. Leaves add freshness and nutrients, while seeds are more commonly used for digestion and cooling remedies.

Coriander is simple, affordable and deeply rooted in Indian food wisdom. Used daily in small amounts, it can support flavour, appetite and overall digestive comfort.
