Bathing in Ayurveda
Hello, I am Dr. Satish Vasant Shindadkar. Today we are going to look at what Ayurveda says about bathing for the protection of health.
Bathing holds great importance in various practices as a daily necessity and a beneficial habit for maintaining health, not only for humans but also for animals.
All kinds of animals and birds—in short, living beings—swim in flowing water and take dips to bathe.
Bathing is also important on auspicious occasions, during religious rituals, worship of deities, and similar events.
During many pilgrimages, it is customary to bathe in the rivers of the respective sacred places.
After returning home tired from travel,
after coming home from the heat,
or after sweating heavily,
people bathe. This increases enthusiasm and stimulates the appetite.
In summary, cleanliness is the primary benefit of bathing, and it makes a person feel refreshed.
When the skin is cleaned, sweat and dirt on its surface are removed, creating a sense of mental freshness and purity.
Our skin has countless tiny pores.
We wear clothes throughout the day.
Depending on the physical effort involved in our work, as well as dust, smoke, and heat in the air, we sweat to varying degrees.
This sweat is absorbed by our clothes.
Some of it dries due to the air, and through this sweat, tiny particles of dust and other microscopic substances mix together, forming a layer of grime on the skin.
This layer of dust mixed with sweat can cause various skin disorders.
When we bathe, if we clean the skin properly, these dust particles are removed.
However, many times bathing is done in great haste, or even after washing with a particular soap, this grime does not come off, which can lead to various skin diseases.
Therefore, in the past people used to make scrubbers from gold, silver, or brass.
These were used to rub the skin and remove dirt.
Even today, many people use such scrubbers.
Some people also use smooth stone pebbles to scrub the body.
Many artistic clay scrubbers are still available in the market. They help remove the sticky layer of sweat and dirt.
The pores of the skin open up,
and the skin feels lighter.
However, in today's modern era, the use of such scrubbers has become almost negligible,
and this is one reason why various skin disorders are increasing.
Ayurveda recommends herbal cleansing powder (ubtan), which is considered superior to soap for cleaning dirt from the body.
Using such herbal powder also helps clean the dirt from the skin.
In addition, herbal ubtans made from various plants provide many benefits, such as:
giving the skin a pleasant fragrance,
eliminating the bad odor of sweat,
making the skin radiant,
making the skin soft,
and many other advantages.
Therefore, instead of soap, one should primarily use herbal ubtan. Also, according to one's convenience, the skin should be scrubbed clean at least twice a week using a gold, stone, or clay scrubber.
Regarding the type of water that should be used for bathing, Ayurveda has given very thoughtful guidance.
Accordingly, during the summer season,
it is considered best to bathe with lukewarm or room-temperature water.
Similarly, in winter, when it is extremely cold,
one should bathe with water that is as warm as the skin can comfortably tolerate.
In general, the body below the neck should be bathed with lukewarm or comfortably warm water,
while the area above the neck, including the head, should be washed with moderately warm water—that is, what we commonly call lukewarm water.
Using very hot water on the head is not good for the hair.
It can lead to hair loss,
premature graying,
and similar problems.
It is also harmful to the eyes.
In short, using moderately warm water for bathing is the best.
Depending on the nature of your work, once or twice a week,
instead of soap, you should use herbal ubtan and a scrubber to clean the skin.
If you do so, you can certainly obtain the benefits of bathing as described in Ayurveda.
